Still In The Thick Of It

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Our up and down Orioles are still at it. Won five in a row in Minnesota and Cleveland, only to drop three straight this week before finally coming into the win column today with a 6-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

As the calendar flips to August next week, the window of opportunity on the post season gets a little tighter.  Division games are plentiful in the next two months so it is certainly a possibility, but the uphill battle will be severe.

First off, the Orioles team ERA is still over 4, thanks in part to large blowouts like the 10-1 romp loss to Tampa on Wednesday.  And our paltry team BA is around .239 as of today.  Not good.  Throw in a big run differential in the direction of the opposing clubs and also a mediocre .500 record at home, and it is a head scratcher as to why this club is still in second place.

Because they win the close games, a lot of times in extra innings, is the main reason they are doing well.  This is a very scrappy bunch.  They win ugly but they win.  And the excitement they generate with the nail biting moments is unnerving, but also exhilarating as well.

When was the last time you were actually proud of the Baltimore Orioles in late July?  Been a while.  Seven years at least.  So while nothing is set in stone and there are a lot of fundamentals that still need to be hammered out like cutting back on errors and more plate discipline, overall we must smile at the positive summer the Orioles have given to the fans thus far.

Three games against the scorching hot Athletics begins tomorrow night.  See you there.
