Alone At The Top

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

With only a 1/2 game lead over Tampa Bay, nothing is sure to last.  But for the moment, we should indulge in it.

Coming off the sweetest victory since last September 28 - coincidentally also against Boston - the Orioles are ten games above .500 and have caught the sports world off guard.

Combine great offense, stellar starting pitching, a ridiculously good bullpen, and above-average defense and you probably will have a lot of success.  And that is exactly what it is right now in the first week of May.  A success.  Winning five out of six on a road trip through the Bronx and Boston is unheard of these days.

I cannot be more proud of our guys.  What a way to start the season.  And keeping it together even when tested in extra-inning affairs shows a lot of heart to this team.  Chris Davis, even with an 0-8 day at the plate, came in to be the winning pitcher yesterday.  That my friends is called teamwork.

Will this improbable run continue this year?  Who really knows?

Tampa Bay is the team to beat currently and Texas is the 2-time defending AL champion.  So there are a lot of obstacles ahead before the words "post season" should even be uttered.  That being said, it is always fun to think about even in this very eary point of the 2012 season.

The Orioles have been great.  Astonishing really.  In just about all categories too.  Improvement still needed in a few spots but like any other die-hard Baltimore fan, my face hurts from all the recent grinning.

Keep it going Birds!  The power of the cartoon bird is back and now the AL is beginning to fear us again.
