Top 10 Things of This Horrible Season

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Instead of reflecting on recent happenings, I am going to list what I consider to the the worst of the worst this season. And yes, there are a lot of bad things going on with this team and franchise. So here we go.

1) Injuries - they took down Roberts, Izturis, Matusz, Arrieta, and several other key players. Certainly a factor in our daily awfulness.

2) Bullpen bums - Mike Gonzalez comes to mind first but there have been a lot of others like Rapada and Berken just being busts. Our closer is pretty good, though he does make you sweat.

3) Starting pitching - it is a joke. The cavalry never arrived. In hindsight, we should have kept Rick Kranitz. Since Mark Connor retired in June, it has been abysmal to say the least.

4) Still in last place - for what will be the 4th straight season.

5) Andy MacPahil - his plan is over. No one seems to believe in him anymore and the likely conclusion from his silence is that he will be gone after the season along with a lot of other front office staff. Most of the fan base would welcome his departure.

6) Other cellar-dwellars flourish - so we have the Indians, Nationals, and Pirates all doing much better than us. Talk about salt in the wounds.

7) Buck Showalter - sure he is better than Dave but what has he really accomplished. I mean, I really respect the man but I am not overly impressed. Last year he wowed us all but the team has plateaued as of now.

8) Promotions - we lack there of. Usually the Orioles have 15-20 promotions/giveaways per season. This year is more like 11. Great way to draw fans in! And no gift for season ticket holder? What they hell are they thinking?

9) The bats - Buying the bats might work (Pujols) if you get someone who still has something left in the tank. But the over-the-hill guys who seem to come here year after year (remember Sosa?) just is not working.

10) Ownership - well they are always dragged thru the mud and rightfully so. They don't seem to care about the on the field product. They disrespected Brooks with the statue across the street. And they still allow smoking in the park. They need to go. Cal for owner!!!!
