Two Out of Three Ain't Bad

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Meatloaf told us in 1977 not to be sad. So while I am a bit angry at the bullpen, overall it was a good series. I would have loved to swept the chowdah nitwits back to their crummy green park, but it was not to be this time.

After the split with the Twins, and a beating by New York, it was a positive sign to rebound with good pitching and more consistent hitting. Guys like Lee and Vlad have woken up a bit. Now only if we can get Nick and Mark to do the same. Time is all we need.

Starting pitching was superb. Zach Britton may be an AL Rookie of the Year candidate. Poor J. Guts had another good outing blown by the pen. I could have strangled Koji for that HR choke. Although we did get the win in the end. And Brad B. held up his own last night against Boston. Again, it was the pen meltdown that caused the Birds to get another L in the column.

We have an inconsistent pen. Jim Johnson is great, though he did give up a run last night. Rupe, Accardo, and some of the others need more work and experience. As far and overpaid "Gonzo" goes, I am advocating for his dismissal from the organization. Waste of money and takes up a spot on the team that someone more deserving can have. I know he is one of the only lefties we have, but he needs to go. For the sake of sanity and to show the team you can be let go if you stink, he needs to go. Maybe back to the NL. Not sure. Or be like Atkins from last year and have your career be over.

The next seven games will be spent on the road. Luckily they are against teams who are doing poorly at the moment. It would be nice to take 5 or 6 out of 7 against the White Sox and Royals. Kansas City has been bitten by the injury bug as of late, so they may be ripe for the picking at the moment.

The next home stand does not begin for another week. Between now and then, I hope the Orioles continue to get better. Injuries and poor play at time has taken the wind out of the sails of the franchise once again. As was evidenced by the attendance during the NY and Boston series, people don't seem to care right now. So it is up to the players and management to make them interested once again. And the only way you can do that is to win and win consistently.

It is not even one month into the season yet. The Birds are a lot better off than they were at this point last year, so we have that as a blessing. Now the call to duty is only to keep getting better.
