Dark Clouds Gathering?

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Exactly two weeks to go before MLB Opening Day on March 31. And our wonderful new flock of Birds seem to be regressing lately. With a current record of 8-9-2, they aren't exactly setting the Grapefruit League on fire. But, the two AL teams with the best spring records right now are Kansas City and Seattle. So let us look at this objectively for just a little while longer.

Injuries are taking their toll. Koji is not himself yet. B-Rob has his nagging back. And our new 1b player has yet to appear in a game. So not all the weapons are sharp.

Pitching looked (as in past tense) strong for a while. Recent shellings have shown that there still is a long way to go. And yesterday's 10-0 drubbing to the Yankees was mega-shameful. Vlad got the only hit for the Orioles as we looked lost and confused at the plate.

Keep in mind, this is a new team working together for the first time. Buck is in his first full year. All his support staff of coaches are new to Baltimore. Lots of first time orange and black wearers too this spring. Still a lot of questions to be answered?

Like: Where is Matt Wieters' power? Why can't Luke Scott hit? Who will be the backup catcher? Who will be the 5th starter? Will both Reimold and Pie make the team? Do we have a backup option at 2nd base not named Izturis?

Well, we have the Pirates again today. Perhaps that will stop the losing streak of two games and begin the climb out of the pit of offensive woes. I am not pushing the panic button yet. I have faith in Buck and his plans. Given the revolving door of managers since 1998, I think we have our guy finally.

Stay focused. Break out those hats and windbreakers. Getting close to time to rock the Yard again. Only a few weeks to go.
