Say Goodbye to 2010

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Yes, it is over. Stick a fork in the team. The unlucky 13th consecutive losing season has come to an end. The Orioles did drop the final game of the year to the Detroit Tigers, but they took the first three games of the series and finished the season 66-96, a 2 game improvement over last year.

Buck Showalter - who is now every one's hero - finished with 34 wins in a short stint at the helm which began on August 3rd. He also became the first manager in the modern era (since 1900) to guide a team to more wins than they had when he started. Dave Trembley and Juan Samuel had only 32 wins between them from April through August. Buck finished with an almost .600 winning percentage and gained the respect of players, fans, and media overnight. All hail our 21st century Earl Weaver!

I will wait a few weeks and look back on our season with all its aches and pains. For now I will sit back and watch the playoffs with interest and root for several underdog teams. Right now, I support the Reds, Giants, Rangers, and Twins in the first round. New blood is needed my friends.

I will be back in a week or two for my final reflection on the season. Have no fear Orioles fans, for Buck Showalter is here!
