Is This Team Fun or What?

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Manager of the Year in 2011 - Buck Showalter. It may be a year away but I am nominating him now.

.622 winning percentage since he got here. Better all around play. Better attitude. More enthusiastic fans. I can easily go on...

Before losing the series to the Yankees we had won 4 straight series including a sweep of Toronto. And now we get to go on the road and chip away at Boston, Tampa and Toronto and really show them that - finally - we are a team on the rise. If we had this level of winning all year, we'd be the best team in baseball at the moment. What a difference from May/June. Guys come back from the DL and the addition of a top grade manager has literally reversed the fortunes of this franchise. And Birdland suddenly has a lot to "chirp" about.

A few observations:

1) Starting rotation looking pretty good. Next year a rotating five of Arrieta, Guthrie, Tillman, Matusz and maybe Bergesen would be nice.

2) Koji is not a closer. I do like the guy but 10 million for his unevenness is not worth it. Maybe a 8th inning man? David Hernandez hopefully will get a shot at the 9th inning role next year.

3) We still need a power DH/1B. Adam Dunn might be a good pickup if no one is available.

4) Although it is a mega long shot - getting Albert Pujols would be excellent!

Guys who are unlikely to return: Millwood, Albers, Lugo and a few others.

I just hate the thought of having to wait until March again to see this team in action. Going to be a long, yet very exciting winter for us fans.

Now - let us end the year on a high note. Sweeping the Bo Sox would be a step in the right direction.
