Chowdah - Final Destination

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

August 2010 has been a great month. Orioles first month over .500 since early 2008. First August over .500 since August 1997. Buck Showalter is clearly THE MAN now in Birdland. In fact, the team is giving out SHOWALTER t-shirts at the next giveaway in September. Talk about making an immediate impact!

After another sweep of the Angels (wouldn't it be great if we played them all year?), the Orioles at 16-10 under Buck now have the impending New England invasion for the last time this season. The Boston club is now 7 back in the A.L. East with their division and wild card hopes quickly evaporating. A dagger in their hearts would satisfy a lot of people in this city. Since the Rays and Yankees look like locks for the postseason, knocking out the other nemesis would be quite satisfying for me and numerous other Baltimore fans who have taken a lot of crap from visiting Chowdah fans over the last several seasons.

The Orioles are currently in evaluation mode. Having been officially eliminated from the playoffs, they now are looking at prospects and seeing which free agents they want to re-sign and keep in Baltimore. In our last month of the season playing the spoiler role, you will see the future of this club. I hope it is bright.

Given everything that has transpired since the season began, at least now things seem a bit more calm and the atmosphere more relaxed. It might be because people stopped paying attention and the focus now has turned to football. I am glad Buck is here and our franchise is more stable than I have seen in years.

On another note - RIP Bluefield Orioles. Sad to see the parent club eliminate that relationship that has existed for 53 seasons. Part of history is just evaporating.
