Swatting the Bugs

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

It started with the win over the Marlins on Thursday and continued with three come from behind victories over the Washington Nats during the weekend. Call it karma or the positive influence of the 1970 WS Championship team that was around. Who cares what you call it, we still won and swept our local NL rivals right back to River City.

Yes, I still see the standings and realize we are 29 games below .500. But with this marked improvement over the weekend I am a bit more optimistic. The offense has got it going on a bit and has come back from some pretty big deficits too thanks to lousy starting pitching. These Birds have to feel good about themselves as of late but need to keep it going. No resting on your laurels just because you won four straight.

Now that 2010 Oriole bust Garrett Atkins has been released, we should see our lineup stabilize a bit. And once the starting pitching gets refined a bit, I believe we will be in good shape after the All-Star break. I was very impressed with former starter David Hernandez yesterday who moved down some Washington Bugs on 6 straight pitches. Very nice! A future closer in the making I believe.

From a personal standpoint, I must say this weekend was excellent. I had the privilege of going to the 1970 Hall of Fame lunch on Saturday and got to meet Brooks, Frank, Earl and a number of the other players. What a thrill for someone who is such a clear supporter of the Orioles to meet some of the best who ever played. I had a blast and coupled with the sweep, it could not have been a better weekend unless maybe the temps were a little lower.

Now with interleague play behind us for this year, time to get down to business and keep the hot streak going.
