Final Countdown

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Two more spring training games, and then it begins. Tuesday marks the Orioles first true test with three games at the Trop in Florida against the Devil-less Rays. Then they return home for series' against Toronto and Tampa.

Yesterday provided a nice victory over Tampa thanks to Ty Wiggington and his sacrifice fly. The pitching was pretty good and we snuck out a win against a good AL East club. The same cannot be said about the game vs. Boston the previous day when we allowed two grand slams in a debacle.

Jason Berken looks awful. Last year we used him as a starter and now he is headed for the pen. Guthrie, Berken, and the Koji experiment have all been busts this spring. Our weakness is still our pitching for sure and until we seal up the cracks in the rotation and in the pen, we are going to get clobbered on occasion. Growing pains they call them, but 12 years of growing pains does begin to wear a little thin.

Yesterday, the Orioles acquired Julio Lugo for cash and a player to be named later. Looks like Izturis gets some competition for the starting job and it would appear that Robert Andino is on his way out. Best part is, Boston is still paying his salary as part of the deal sending him to St. Louis and the Orioles only have to kick in the league minimum.

On another note, I noticed on Wednesday as I walked by OPACY that the numbers were gone. We all remember when #8 was stolen last fall by some young punks. Well, that has been replaced with a more solid (non hollow) number. The other 5 numbers have all been removed assuming they will be replaced with better and sturdier ones as well. First, I thought new vandals had gotten to them, but no news reports came out nor was there crime scene tape next to the warehouse. Whew. Almost had a heart attack!

The countdown continues... and I can hardly contain myself!

Orange and Black is back!
