January Musings

Miggy is returning to the Orioles today with a press conference going on as we speak. He is scheduled to receive $6 million for a one-year deal, and will be the starting third baseman for the Birds.

During his first tenure with the Orioles, I was a huge Tejada supporter. He made the All-Star team and won MVP in 2005, set Oriole franchise records for RBI and hits in a single season, and was loved by fans. But he grew disgruntled and often asked to be traded, which was finally granted after the 2007 season. He spent two seasons in the National League with the Astros and now he is back.

Personally, I would rather not have him. His bat will give us more pop in the lineup, but the fact that he is a proven liar really bothers me. First, there was the deal with his age. Second, there is his still unknown involvement with steroids. Was he a user or just a possible supplier (Palmeiro incident) or both?

I am interested to see how he will be accepted during his second tour here. Will he be the same player he was in 2004-06 - probably not. He will not be wearing the number 10 (it belongs to Adam Jones now) and he will be at a new position. I highly doubt Miggy is the missing piece but I hope he does help us out.

By the way, I was disappointed with Fan Fest this year. It was too chaotic and unorganized. Impossible to get an autograph too. I hope the team does the right thing and does it next year in March back at the ballpark. Much more enjoyable in that venue in my opinion.
