Goodbye Zaun...Hello Moeller

By: Joseph Merkel

In case you haven't heard, back-up catcher Gregg Zaun has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for a Player to be named later or cash considerations.

The 38-year-old started the year off slow but has played considerably better, notably at the plate, since the arrival of uber-prospect Matt Wieters. Since Zaun was replaced by the young stud, he has hit well over .300 in his limited role while handling a rotation that had debuted six rookie pitchers this year.

Chad Moeller was recalled by the club after spending the season with the Orioles' Triple-A club the Norfolk Tides. Moeller hit a depressing .203 in 35 games with the Tides. Moeller began the year as the club's back-up catcher behind Zaun hitting .200, thus giving him a deserved demotion.

While Zaun has become a bigger asset to the club in recent weeks, you have to hand it to Andy McPhail for shedding payroll. The Orioles weren't even close to contending this year. Well, maybe contending for the No. 1 pick in the draft next year...Which is nothing to be proud of.

Perhaps after shedding some payroll, the Orioles will be able to sign some of their recent draft picks, particularly second-round pick Mychal Givens, to some above-slot bonuses.

My hat is off to your Gregg Zaun, you, like Chad Bradford before you are being given a second chance. You sir, will get to play for a contender and have the opportunity to play in October.
