Sping Fever

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

So far, so good I would say. And you don’t say that too often about the Birds these days. The offseason has been great thus far by recent Baltimore standards.

It began with the updating of the uniforms last December. Bringing back the city name to the road jerseys was something that we as fans demanded. Always remember to satisfy the fans first. Check.

The second big plus was getting Markakis and Roberts locked up for the long term. Andy MacPhail once again listened to the fans and used his baseball genius to keep the good home-grown talent here. Smart Andy, very smart.

Third was making good trades and signings. We don’t know how Hill, Pie, Wigginton, or Uehara will do this year. But we are trying to get better and sometimes you don’t always succeed in building a winner but unlike the Dan Snyder/George Steinbrenner approach of buying the biggest names around, we are building a good foundation. Kudos to the front office.

As of today, the Orioles look decent in spring training contests. A record of 4-2 is hardly an indication of how the season will unfold, but we are whittling down the roster to get the best players available in order to field a competitive team. Players like Brad Bergesen have already impressed me, but there is a long way to go until opening day.

The countdown until April 6 begins. What happens between now and then is anyone’s guess but the ride sure is fun.
