Pitching Still the Question Mark

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

Koji Uehara is sidelined with a hamsting injury. Dave Pauley has a high ERA. Adam Eaton has not shown us his stuff yet. Rich Hill has elbow issues. So basically, we know Jeremy Guthrie is a starter and that is it.

This is what spring training is all about. Finding out which players fit best in which roles and trying to make all the pieces work. Being a manager or a coach is about evaluating talent and using that specific talent in a format to benefit the club.

The Orioles still have a long way to go until they get to the Yankee or Cub level of competitiveness and consistency. But with a 7-6 spring training mark as of today, which includes several key players away for the WBC, things look promising without giving us too much overconfidence.

And despite what local media outlets have been saying about us getting Pedro Martinez, I think it would be a bad move. Build from within, stay young and healthy, and don't spend on a has-been who used to be a big name.

Our roster should be shaking out within the next 10 days. Watch, see, and learn who the 2009 Orioles will be.
