It Begins Today

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

That teaser season known as spring training opens today for the Birds against the N.Y. Mets. This is the time of year when we as fans have the most hope and excitement for the upcoming season ahead.

The Orioles were given high grades for making smart off season moves including a few trades, some free agent signings, and the contract extensions for Markakis and Roberts. Now we have to see if our teams begins to gel a bit.

Like last year, the Orioles are predicted to finish last in the AL East. Against teams like New York and defending AL Champion Tampa Bay, we are considered vastly inferior. Funny how a lot of people used to think of the Rays that way too. Once you show the league what you are made of, things can change overnight in a big way.

With a pitching rotation yet to be set and rosters to be finalized, it is any one's guess what the final 2009 squad will look like. In a few weeks we'll have a better idea going forward this year.

I, for one, love the smell of baseball in the air. Too bad I can't afford to go down to spring training. Is there some sort of bailout package I can apply for to go to Florida?
