10 Things Worth Noting

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

As spring training opens, here a few things to think about and reflect on for the upcoming season.
My regular column will appear again within a few days.

1) Youth movement vs. older, past-their prime veterans. The Orioles are getting younger and it is a bright spot.

2) New rotation - only Guthrie is back from last year. We had a disastrous team ERA so new arms and faces should hopefully signal improvement on that front.

3) Long term deals - Markakis is locked up for six years, and it looks like we are going to have Roberts too for at least four more if he deal gets done. Consistency and commitment are good things.

4) Speedy outfield - youth and quickness are the themes with Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, and Felix Pie patrolling the grass

5) Return from injuries - Matt Albers, Chris Ray and other bullpen players could return to form this year and raise some eyebrows if this team gels together early

6) BALTIMORE - a return to the past with wonderful new road jerseys

7) Dave Trembley - begins his 2nd full season as the skipper with the full support of the front office. Past managers got the axe around two years, but I think Dave is here to stay for a while.

8) Big bats - Silver slugger Aubrey Huff joins Melvin Mora, Nick Markakis, and Luke Scott as our power players

9) Matt Wieters - we hope to see you behind the plate soon!

10) .500 ball? - 20 years ago the "Why Not" Orioles surprised everyone. Last season the dreadful Rays went to the World Series. Anything can happen, so keep the faith.
